iPad Goes Back to the Future

So Penguin is talking about how tablets (read “iPads”) will lead to new forms of books. Their vision? Encarta, circa a decade ago. Really? This is what Penguin thinks people want from Pengiun? They’re going to try to go head-to-head with PopCap?

Stackpole on piracy, serial fiction

Science-fiction/fantasy author, Mike Stackpole (author of Once a Hero and the first books in the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series) talks about why piracy doesn't bother him. And also buys into the 'return of the serial' when ebooks get underway. (Stackpole has also been a big supporter of podcasting in the gaming world--he's a good guy who is generous with his time):

(Not sure what I messed up before, but reposting this:)

Nothing terribly new to see here. Cory makes his argument, LeGuin is outraged, and Slashdot and Booksquare weigh in.

New Kindle DX falls short?

This really is getting tiresome. It appears even the allegedly pdf-friendly Kindle DX may still have problems converting files due to Amazon's insistence on its own proprietary format. I haven't had a chance to see the DX directly, so I have to withhold judgment for now, but I have to say, if the reviewer is correct, I wouldn't be surprised.

the smell of books

Color me amused. This is obviously meant in quasi-fun, but she makes a good point about fetishizing the object:
