FastPencil / About Us

FastPencil is self-publishing with a twist. The traditional publishing process is a daunting one that can take many months of effort and more money than most writers anticipate. It’s no wonder authors get discouraged.

You shouldn’t have to ask anyone’s permission to write and publish your own book! We have removed the hurdles inherent in traditional publishing by combining amazing advances in print on demand technology with a sophisticated online workflow system.

Reading the future

At this point, the mini chain has purchased a single Espresso for its 28th Street store in Grand Rapids, but it will deliver on-demand books to its Okemos and Lansing stores several times a week.

Fehsenfeld said the bookstore had been exploring on-demand printing for some time, but this year OnDemandBooks, manufacturer of the Espresso, signed content agreements with Google and Ingram Book Co., which helped make his decision. “On demand is important to the future of the industry,” Fehsenfeld said.

Our first spam comment post

So, today, moments ago, marks the first time that a comment spammer posted to this site. Since the site has an image captcha, I assume that the person manually typed in the spam (and also because it was one submission).

I deleted the submission, and temporarily set anon comments to approval before they are published, since there are now a few others besides Rick/Paul/Sam that receive messages emailed from this site.

Social Publishing, Wagn wiki, open extensible architectures

Rick, we need to get together with you sometime and talk to you about some about http://wagn.org as an alternative to Drupal for social publishing platform, and probably as an eventual replacement for Culturing. Both Paul and I are using it as desktop wiki right now, and we both are hacking and modifying it.

The Mutopia Project

Classical and Contemporary Music

The Mutopia Project offers sheet music editions of classical music for free download. These are based on editions in the public domain, and include works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Handel, Mozart, and many others. A team of volunteers are involved in typesetting the music by computer using the LilyPond software. Why not join them?! See the page on how to contribute for more information.

sleeping alone and starting out early: the sleeping alone review of books: Opening Up Education

Good book on the open education movement: Opening Up Education: The Collective Advancement of Education through Open Technology, Open Content, and Open Knowledge (2008, Toru Iiyoshi and M.S. Vijay Kumar, eds.). You can purchase the book through the MIT Press, though an electronic version is available for download under a Creative Commons license here.

What makes this book so useful is that it offers up a framework, from inside of the world of open education, for analyzing--and, if I may be so bold, at times criticizing--the early fruits of its own movement.

The above is an iftf.org project to create a collaborative science workspace. The site is made using http://drupal.org
