Value-added Processing (all foods)

Amalie Lipstreu's picture

A good inventory and assessment of agricultural resources in Ohio, both
production and processing is an important and needed baseline - what
infrastructure do we currently have in place? People with knowledge of
local and regional value added processing needs and capabilities should
come together to examine needs from local to regional to statewide
scales and from small to medium to large scale facilities. A group on
value added processing could initially share knowledge and information
to identify some of the real opportunities for Ohio - locally
controlled, scalable processing for Ohio foodsheds. The group may then
need to meet to complete the assembly of this knowledge and information
and generate specific local, regional and statewide needs for value
added processing infrastructure.

Stinner Endowment- Revision: Infrastructure for Farmers in Appalachian Ohio to Meet the Demand for Locally Procured Staple Foods

Greetings,

This is a revision, in response to the very helpful comments on the proposal in the blog entitled, "Providing Infrastructure for Farmers in Appalachian Ohio to Meet the Demand for Locally Procured Staple Foods".

   Once again, comments are welcome.

Our 2007 NCR-SARE farmer grant to test various staple crops in Appalachian Ohio, has garnered considerable interest in locally procured staple foods among food outlets and consumers, and several new and seasoned farmers are eager to form a staple growers’ cooperative.

Slaughterhouse on Wheels in Lopez Island, WA

September 5, 2008 Wall Street Journal has article about a "slaughterhouse on wheels" on Lopez Island, Washington.  The farmers formed the Island Grown Farmers Cooperative to manage the abattoir. This mobile abattoir opened custom butching options to the small and local farms.  It is the first mobile slaughterhouse to sanctioned by USDA.  The unit handles sheep, pigs and beef.  A diesel truck pulls 8 by 12 foot trailer fitted with sink, water tank and cooling locker.  The trailer is used 3 to 4 times a week with a butcher and inspector.  It is bringing the infrastruc

Stinner Endowment

We recently posted this as a question, but have decided to repost as a new message...  We are working on a proposal for the Stinner Endowment.
The project is fairly broad, covering several social issues, and, appropriately, seeking funding from a wide range of sources, and collaboration from a wide-ranging network.
Here’s the synopsis, after which I will write the question we have for everybody to give input on:

Growing crops on county owned agricultural land for food insecure

Idea description:

Create a partnership among a wide range of stakeholder to use county-owned and well field agricultural land and community food bank kitchens to

  1. grow and process staple foods
  2. develop value added high nutrition cereals and snacks,
  3. distribute food to area school children
  4. create a field trip and service learning program for students
  5. offer living wage for farm work to  county residients
  6. demostrate environmentally and economically sustainable farming methods to area farmers

We would study the feasibility and use the network to create a county task force around food security. We see that task force as a launch pad for the development of a county based peak oil task force.

Who is behind this idea?:
M.Ajamian B.Jaeger
What geographic area will be served?:
We are working in SE Ohio, but see this as a potential model for all Ohio counties and beyond.

Would you like to see the creation of a new site for evaluating/rating market prices for specialty food processing equipment

Context: Local foods producers often find themselves producing/processing food to fill un-serviced voids and needs, which often requires specialty equipment. The post that this poll links to discusses the possibility of creating a site that will allow users to post listings of specialty equipment, and rank and give feedback, adn genrally co-analyze the market and prices for this equipment. The goal is to getr a better idea about what is a fair market price, what is the availablity, etc

Proposal:

yes!: I like this idea the way that it is! Please go ahead and do it as you describe next week

No, I am not interested in this at all, it would be of no use to me, or I think it wouldn't work. I'll leave a comment below describing why.

Would a rating system work to get feedback on equipment prices?

At the recent value-added dairy processing group meeting, a request was made for an anonymous way to compare used equipment prices. Small-scale processing equipment apparently can be difficult to come by and once found it's hard to know what a reasonable or going price is because so few sales are being made. Our site administrator is working on adding a rating tool to the site for things like proposals and ideas, much like the 1 to 5 star ratings that you are asked to give on travel websites. ...

More information about food processors data in Ohio

The processor data that is available through Market Maker, according to Julie Fox, was provided by InfoUSA (who it seems gather their information from the Yellow Pages).

The data used by Fred Hitzhusen and his team is from the Harris Ohio Industrial Directory. I attach their report "Assessing Ohio's Biomass Resources for Energy Potential Using GIS", which presents some maps regarding the distribution of processors in Ohio (starting on page 75). They plan to make their data publicly available after publishing their current work.

After we discussed data requirements during our conference call on Friday, I happened to meet Julie Fox and used the opportunity to ask her about data availability on Market Maker. I performed a search on Market Maker and came up with the following numbers (processors in Ohio by category): Bakery Products: 1072 Beverages: 243 Dairy Products: 261 Fats and Oils: 15
